It's Official: Joss Whedon and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ordered to Series by ABC

Marvel Studios' first TV series debuts this fall.

    by Eric Goldman
    May 10, 2013

We all assumed it was a sure thing, but it's now finally official - ABC has picked up Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a series, debuting this fall.

Co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and directed by Joss Whedon, the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot was filmed back in January - one of the earliest pilots to go into production this year. It was obviously a high profile project, both as an offshoot of the uber-successful Marvel movie series and specifically as a follow-up/spinoff of Whedon's amazingly huge Avengers movie, the third highest grossing film ever.

Along the way, ABC cautioned they had not given the greenlight to the project beyond the pilot stage, but it would have been shocking if it hadn't been picked up, given all the factors involved. The massive success of Iron Man 3 only cemented the fact that a Marvel-centric TV series was a highly desirable commodity at this point.

Clark Gregg reprises his role from the Marvel films as Phil Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., joined by a cast that includes Ming-Na Wen, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet and J. August Richards.

TVLine notes that the first promo for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air this weekend, during Sunday night's Once Upon a Time finale.

'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' officially picked up at ABC; get your first look at the castBy Rick Porter

    May 10, 2013

ABC has ordered its pilot "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." to series, confirming maybe the most no-brainer decision of this upfront season.

The show stars Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, reprising his role from "The Avengers" and several Marvel movies that preceded it. The cast also includes Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge, Chloe Bennet and Iain de Caestecker.

"Avengers" writer-director Joss Whedon also directed the "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." pilot and co-wrote it with his brother Jed and Maurissa Tancharoen. All three will be executive producers, along with long-time Whedon writer-producer Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb ("Smallville," "Heroes").

Per ABC, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will follow Coulson and his team as "they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary." The first teaser for the series will air Sunday (May 12) during the "Once Upon a Time" season finale.

'S.H.I.E.L.D' gets shiny logo -- EXCLUSIVE

    by James Hibberd

    Marvel’s

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a G.O. for next season on ABC, and below EW.com has the show’s official logo.

    It’s steely.

    It’s shiny.

    It’s got a little lens-flare action.

It’s everything a gang of crime-stoppers facing a world of fantastic threats could want. And this marks just the beginning of the S.H.I.E.L.D. news coming your way over the next week. ABC will debut the first promo during the Once Upon a Time finale Sunday night. Here’s the logo:

ABC officially picks up Joss Whedon's 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

Now where will the comic adaptation land on ABC's schedule?

By Daniel Fienberg Friday, May 10, 2013

Try not to sound too shocked: ABC has officially picked up its TV series based on the most successful cinematic and comic franchise going.

ABC announced late Friday (May 10) afternoon that "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has been sent to series. The formal announcement came after several days of rumors and was followed by ABC saying "More to come next week..." at least hinting that additional series orders may not be coming before the weekend.

The somewhat cumbersomely titled project -- Shawn Ryan's FX classic "The Shield" apparently presented nomenclatural problems -- was directed by "Avengers" helmer Joss Whedon and written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.

Clark Gregg is anchoring the drama, reprising his big-screen role as Agent Phil Coulson. He's joined in the crime-fighting ensemble by Ming-Na Wen, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet and J. August Richards.

While the series order for "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has always verged on a foregone conclusion, one of ABC's biggest mysteries may not be answered until next Tuesday at the network's upfront presentation to advertisers: Where will "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." go on the ABC schedule?

    Stay tuned!

Good! If I had to guess I'd say it'll be on Sundays after OUAT. I think they'l move Revenge back to earlier in the week. There's also the question if they will pick up the OUAT spin-off about Wonderland with Espenson, then it would really be a Whedonverse night!

Rumors began to circulate last night that ABC would be officially ordering "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." to series today and they were right! The series has been picked up by the network for a full season and is expected to hit the airwaves this fall - no word on an episode count at this time. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that ABC will begin a "major marketing push" with the show this Sunday where a special look at the series will air before the season finale of "Once Upon a Time."

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel's feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary.

Coulson's team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot co-writers (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog); Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias); and Jeph Loeb (Smallville) comes Marvel's first TV series.  Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

ABC Officially Orders AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Series

You can all breath a sigh of relief.

We've known that Joss Whedon (working under the pseudonym, Jed Whedon) has been working on the pilot for a S.H.I.E.L.D. television show. But until today we had no idea whether or not Disney's television network ABC would pick it up and thus make all the money in the world. It was real touch and go there for a little while.

But now THR is reporting that "Jed" Whedon's Marvel Universe pilot has been officially picked up. According to the US treasury, just after announcing the news Disney did in fact claim its check for all the money in the world, so there's no going back now.

As a future fan of this show, I would just like to thank all the people who took the time to initiate and foster Kickstarters, write-in campaigns, and online petitions to help influence Marvel/Disney/ABC's decision. Without you, this would not have been possible.

If you'd like to see a little footage from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., you can catch glimpse this Sunday just before the season finale of Once Upon a Time online.

      Here is synopsis:

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Earlier today, we got a very brief look at Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and now the full trailer has been released. The new series takes place after The Avengers, and has Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) leading a new team of S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives against supernatural forces. Watching the TV spot, I was reminded of Heroes, not in terms of story, but in how far we’ve come in terms of special effects and network TV budgets. And while there will certainly be some cool action on display, the closing joke is a welcome reminder of Joss Whedon‘s influence.

Hit the jump to check out the TV spot. The series also stars also stars Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Chloe Bennet. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres this fall on ABC.

ABC's 2013-2014 schedule puts 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' on Tuesdays, 'Wonderland' on Thursdays

'Dancing with the Stars' drops to one night per week

By Daniel Fienberg Tuesday, May 14, 2013

ABC announced its 2013-2014 schedule on Tuesday (May 14) morning in advance of its upfront presentation to advertisers and, without delay, let's answer what may have been the biggest question of the entire upfronts week:

"Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will air on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. starting this fall.

ABC may be assuming that "S.H.I.E.L.D." will effectively promote itself, because the network will have its hands full with eight new shows premiering in the fall, including comedies "The Goldbergs," "Trophy Wife," "Back in the Game" and "Super Fun Night" and the dramas "Lucky 7" and "Betrayal," plus the somewhat surprising decision to air the "Once Upon a Time" spinoff "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" away from the Sunday mothership.

"Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will have to go against "NCIS," but it avoids NFL coverage on Sunday and the Thursday 8 p.m. death slot, so that's a win for the Joss Whedon drama. It will lead into comedies "The Goldbergs" and "Trophy Wife" and then into the lottery winner drama "Lucky 7," giving ABC the challenge of promoting an entirely new night of programming.

                TUESDAY:

                8:00 p.m. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

                9:00 p.m. “The Goldbergs”

                9:30 p.m. “Trophy Wife”

                10:00 p.m. “Lucky 7”

ABC Fall Schedule: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Airing on Tuesdays

                by Eric Goldman
                May 14, 2013

ABC have just revealed the fall 2013 schedule. The info everyone will be looking for is where Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air, and the answer is Tuesdays at 8pm. During a press call, ABC president Paul Lee said he felt S.H.I.E.L.D. could bring in new viewers, given it has a built-in audience thanks to the Marvel movies. As for airing against CBS's huge hit, NCIS, Lee said, "We don’t think it necessarily is the same [audience] as NCIS."

Well, football or not, they basically just got told "you aren't going to win your timeslot". Coulson may be many things, but Gibbs he is not

I certainly hope that Jay is playing Luke Cage -- I do think this show's success will depend on fully embracing the MCU and the Marvel superpowered story setting, and that includes on the good guys' side.

Watched the YouTube trailer, holy crap that looks awesome. I wonder what superhero Jay is? Luke Cage? TV appearances might be a little beneath the pay grade for some of the Avengers movie stars, but it would be nice if we could get an occasional guest episode with Cap or Tony. I haven't been this pumped for a new TV show in a long time. I just hope the OC characters aren't annoying. I kinda hope Daredevil shows up in a movie and not this show, I feel that his origin deserves a better movie treatment than the previous movie. Maybe Punisher can show up at some point in the show? I don't imagine Disney would to do a Punisher movie that takes place in the MCU, so this might be a great chance to see how a violent, disturbed and realistic Frank Castle might fit into a world with super-heroes.

In theory, the show is the perfect medium to field test all sorts of Marvel characters for movie viability by featuring them on the show. Luke Cage would be a great example. Cloak and Dagger leap to mind. What's more, I can't help but wonder... did Marvel give up TV rights for X-Men/Spider-Man/FF, or just film rights?

That trailer is just absolutely epic.

I think one possible problem that the show might face is that a lot of people won't care about the Original Characters which will obviously be the main cast of the show. I think a lot of people will be inherently unsatisfied with a show set in the Marvel Universe that doesn't feature superheroes *all the time*. I think the acting and the writing with the OCs will have to be pretty great to get people to care more about the OCs as opposed to constantly whining "when is [insert superhero] going to appear?"

I really hope the show doesn't rely too much on MOTW. That forumla worked okay in the 90's with Buffy, but times have changed. I really hope the cast isn't just facing a new, unmemorable superpowered bad guy each week like the early seasons of Smalleville.

'SHIELD': Clark Gregg on how Agent Coulson lives

                              by James Hibberd

How was Clarke Gregg’s fan-favorite doomed character Agent Coulson resurrected for ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Well, you won’t learn the answer to that burning question in the show’s first episode. You get some of the answer. But not everything right away.

“I thought they were pranking me a little bit because there was so much blood on the set of The Avengers,” said Gregg while on the carpet of EW and ABC’s party in New York City on Tuesday. “I kept waiting to see, are we going to shoot a version where [Loki] misses? And they didn’t, so I was really surprised to get that call and I wanted to make sure it didn’t do anything to undermine what we achieved there and when [writer-director Joss Whedon] explained the mystery and how they planned to deal with it, with Agent Coulson being around, I was very sold.”

Asked specifically how Coulson comes back, Gregg said: “He’s back. He’s thinks he knows how he’s back. We’ll have to see.”

But even brought back from the dead once to star in S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t have Gregg feeling too cocky — Whedon could always kill him again. “I have a feeling if they killed me off again it would be for good so I’m very careful to read the end of the script every time I get one. It’s like getting struck by lightning. I kind of hope it hits somebody else first before it comes back to me.”

Gregg added: “Agent Coulson represents the people who don’t have superpowers, the guys who actually can be killed — or at least seem to be and yet come back sometimes … Marvel has such a lock on how to do really incredibly visual affects and stunts that we’ve got stuff on our show that I just don’t think we’ve seen on TV before.”

Added co-star Chloe Bennet about the appeal of the show: “If you love The Avengers, if you love any of Joss Whedon’s work, you’re going to absolutely love the show. It’s about these people living in a super world dealing with being human. You see these superhero movies and you see the superheroes struggle but you don’t see how humans do in a world like that. That’s what will draw people in. It’s so human. And it’s so super and awesome still.” – With reporting by Samantha Highfill
