Agent Carter Character to Meet Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. During Final Season

By Matt Webb Mitovich / April 15 2020

Two of ABC’s live-action Marvel series (was there really a third?) will collide when the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cross paths with a character from the gone-too-soon Agent Carter during the former’s seventh and final season.

Enver Gjokaj, whose Daniel Sousa was an agent with the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) on Agent Carter, will reprise that role as a guest star during S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s 13-episode farewell run, which kicks off Wednesday, May 27 at 10/9.

Of course, Agent Carter was set in the 1940s, whereas the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were last seen time-traveling in the suped-up Zephyr to New York circa 1931, so the Sousa we see might not be quite the same.

“We get to see him in a different light,” co-showrunner Jeff Bell told EW.com, which first reported on Gjokaj’s casting. “[Sousa] had a particular role on [Agent Carter], and so we were able to show another color of him that you hadn’t necessarily seen on the show.”

Of note, S.H.I.E.L.D. co-showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen were both writers on the Joss Whedon-created Dollhouse, where Gjokaj played the doll/”active” known as Victor.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Final Season to Feature an Agent Carter Crossover
The final season debuts on May 27

            ON April 15, 2020

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D final season to feature an Agent Carter crossover

After nearly 4 years since Marvel’s Agent Carter had aired its second and final season in 2016, EW brings word that the upcoming final season of Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D will be featuring an Agent Carter crossover with Enver Gjokaj making his return to the Marvel TV Universe as he reprises his role as Agent Daniel Sousa. Co-creator Jed Whedon has also teased Daniel Sousa’s fun interaction with Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson, revealing how fans will get to see how similar their characters are.

“One of the things we think is so fun — especially with Coulson, who’s just a fanboy for S.H.I.E.L.D. history — is them just getting to walk right into [that history],” Whedon said in his interview with the outlet. “With Sousa, we had a good opportunity to hit that note with Agent Coulson.”

Gjokaj adds, “What’s unexpectedly, for me, really fun is that we realized once we got Coulson and [Sousa] in the same scene that they’re very similar.”

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD wrapped production on its final season last summer, long before COVID-19 essentially brought the entertainment industry to a halt. When we last left our heroes, they had been transported back to 1920s New York City. Early looks at the upcoming episodes have shown the characters in era-appropriate outfits.

The series stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie, Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez, John Hannah as Holden Radcliffe, Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Luke Mitchell as Lincoln Campbell, and Nick Blood as Lance Hunter.

The series was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.

The final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will also mark the end of Marvel Television as we’ve come to know it over the past several years. Once Kevin Feige assumed his new role as Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer, the company’s TV division was absorbed by Marvel Studios, giving Feige control over all small-screen ventures. Although the series is ending, at least one cast member is convinced that its characters won’t completely disappear from the MCU landscape. Last fall, Ming-Na Wen suggested that Melinda May could have a role to play in future Marvel projects.

Should be interesting. Many thought Peggy would end up with Sousa but Avengers Endgame revealed who Peggy would ultimately end up with.

I'm also curious if they will touch on the ending of Agent Carter Season 2 and the cliffhanger/setup for a season 3 story it ended on.

            • This also confirms Ming's Instagram mistake a few months back. Since Agent Carter was set in the 40's unless SHIELD jumps in time again it probably won't touch on the cliffhangers, being Season 6 ended in 1931.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings back Agent Carter character in season 7 first look

By Chancellor Agard April 15, 2020

                Spoiler:

Enver Gjokaj never expected to play Agent Carter's Daniel Sousa again after the Marvel series' two-season run ended in 2016. Thankfully, fate had other plans. EW can exclusively reveal that Gjokaj will guest-star as Sousa in the seventh and final season of ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and you can get an exclusive first look above.

"It wasn't anywhere near my brain," says Gjokaj, who was surprised when the opportunity to reprise the role was presented to him. "I would've been thrilled at any moment for it to come back, but I think as an actor you don't have time. You just have to move on to the next project."

Although Agent Carter aired on the same network as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the shows never had a substantial crossover (beyond a flashback in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s season 2 premiere) because they're set in different time periods: Carter in the 1940s and S.H.I.E.L.D. in the present. But now the latter show has added time-travel to its storytelling arsenal.

Last summer's S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 finale ended with Daisy (Chloe Bennet), LMD Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), and their crew jumping back to 1931 New York City in a modified Zephyr because the Chronicoms were planning to attack S.H.I.E.L.D. at different points in time. The team's timey-wimey farewell adventure in season 7 will eventually lead them to cross paths with Sousa.

"One of the things we think is so fun — especially with Coulson, who's just a fanboy for S.H.I.E.L.D. history — is them just getting to walk right into [that history]," says co-showrunner Jed Whedon. "With Sousa, we had a good opportunity to hit that note with Agent Coulson."

Gjokaj adds, "What's unexpectedly, for me, really fun is that we realized once we got Coulson and [Sousa] in the same scene that they're very similar."

                Spoiler:

When we last saw Sousa in the Agent Carter series finale, he was running the SSR's Los Angeles bureau and making out with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). With his appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "We get to see him in a different light," says co-showrunner Jeff Bell. "[Sousa] had a particular role on [Agent Carter], and so we were able to show another color of him that you hadn't necessarily seen on the show."

Co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen adds, "Since Jed and I worked with him on Dollhouse, we're very aware of what Enver is capable of. So we were just feeling like we could dive a little deeper with Sousa."

                Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Wednesday, May 27, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

It's a pretty crap trailer. But it confirms that they'll be jumping to several different periods of time, so the Agent Carter thing is kind of a moot point. They have no reason not to have Hayley guest star, if they were able to fit the schedules.
You keep waiting for the dust to settle and then you realize it; the dust is your life going on. If happy comes along - that weird unbearable delight that's actual happy - I think you have to grab it while you can. You take what you can get, 'cause it's here, and then...gone.
