  • Is Xander "a demon magnet" or is he naturally attracted to powerful girls/women?

    All said regarding writers, producers, actors, directors, viewers, readers, etc. are what I remember, my opinions, etc.

    * We first clearly see Alexander Lavelle Harris's attraction to Buffy. Buffy Anne Summers is not better-looking--or at least significantly better-looking--than Cordelia Chase and some of the random Cordettes and other guest starts we see. But Buffy's the Slayer.

    * Bug lady ("Teacher's Pet" (B 1.04)) is obviously a powerful woman.

    * Next is Ampata (Inca Princess from "Inca Mummy Girl" (B 2.04)).

    * Cordelia Chase has power from simply being 'rich' and being the most popular girl in school. But Xander/Cordelia starts after Cordelia becomes a Scooby.

    And we see Xander's actually more attracted to both Buffy and Willow than he's attracted to Cordelia.

    * Kendra Young is obviously another Slayer.

    * Faith Lehane is obviously another Slayer.

    * Xander becomes attracted to Willow Rosenberg after she becomes a witch (outside of momentary attraction in "When She Was Bad" (B 2.01)).

    * Anyanka is a former vengeance demon.

    * Xander in BtVS S8
    Spoiler:
    has a 'thing' with another Slayer. And he eventually gets with Dawn Summers (who is still the Key)).

    Yep, I find it funny that for a guy who couldn't get one girl, he did get almost all the others. Buffy, Joyce and Tara are the only main characters who had no romantic or sexual relations with him. And as we could obviously disqualify Joyce and Tara, so it would be only Buffy. And it probably exactly why it's happened. He was the only guy character who wasn't protagonist's love interest, so naturally he's got all these storylines. From in-universe point of view it doesn't have any sense at all. It just one of many moments in writing that better to just ignore.

      Nope. Just wanted what he couldn't have.

      It's very common for men to be attracted to powerful girls. Conquistador and all that by his dream.

        His essential purpose from a character design standpoint within the theme of the show was to be a heterosexual male who, instead of being intimidated or turned off by powerful, competent women, was attracted to and inspired by them. I think "demon magnet" plays as a winking joke about the negative implications of that preference in a world populated by superpowered monsters.

          Yes, he defintely is a demon magnet. You forgot to mention the demon played by Ashanti whom he dated in Season 7. Also, Cordelia was a normal human in High School but she later became half demon and finally even a higher being.

          He never dated someone who was simply human and had never been or never became supernatural. That can't be a coincidence.

            Maybe Amy's love spell had some hidden long lasting consequences?

              Neither did Willow. Moloch, Oz, Tara, Kennedy...

              Xander's interests later turned out to be supernatural, but Cordy and Anya were humans at the time of their relations. I would not say he's more of a demon magnet than the other two.

                I read a story - long since disappeared sadly - which paired Xander with Illyria. It highlighted his willingness to explain simple concepts. I would have loved to have seen that pairing.
                Can we agree that the writers made everyone do and say everything with a thought to getting good ratings and being renewed. This includes everything we love as well as everything we hate.
