  • Corrupt - the episode that never was

I was totally flummoxed to read that Lonely Hearts was a last-minute re-write of an entire script. The second episode for season 1 was supposed to be called Corrupt and it dealt with prostitution. Apparently, the episode's theme was too controversial or dark for it to be filmed as planned and the network called for a re-write:

    Did you know about that?

Never heard about that and I wish this article would tell us more about why it was so controversial. The things they write about the concept for Kate (a detective who does sex work to finance her drug addiction) don't sound all that shocking (if you compare it to other themes in the 'verse) and also as something that could be changed without re-writing the whole plot.

Sending Cordy undercover as a prostitute while sex workers go missing, is disturbing though. Especially since Lonely Hearts is only the second episode (after she was nearly killed in the first one -especially considering the undertones-). She just works there, never learned to fight and is 18 years old.

Greenwalt talks about on the Angel Reunion. The Network killed it late in the day, so it was a rush job getting the meh episode they got out there

Yep and this is the script for that episode. They did use scenes in the script for future episodes. They used the begining in I Will Remember You for example.

I thought Kate was a prostitute before I found out she was a cop. Was that the wrong thing to think?

From Slayers & Vampires, page 315:

David Greenwalt: David Fury had written another script and we were really going dark. For example, in the second script Angel not only doesn't save the girl, he gets down on the floor and licks up he blood.(...) We also had a gal cop, the Kate Lockley character, who'd gone undercover and had become a real hooker and cocaine addict. The WB read that and completely ****ing freaked out. There was a big meeting and we shut down.

David Fury: I broke the story with Joss and David, which was a little dark. It introduced the character of Kate Lockley, the policeman and undercover cop, but it went to darker places. The were some pretty awful things in there. It dealt with some kind of prostitutes who were ripping people apart. (...) David and Joss -and maybe more so David- waned to set it apart from Buffy. He didn't want it to be Buffy 2, so he wanted to go to a much darker place. He wanted to be pushing the envelope. That's what I went for a couple of weeks from production the studio just balked.

Joss Whedon: The shutdown really didn't mean anything except that we took a little time to rewrite the second story, because the second episode is really pretty important in terms of mission statement.

Interesting that both Greenwalt and Fury are talking about the huge changes but Joss is the opposite. Nope nothing is different

Good move, IMO. The original script went too far, too fast. It's fine to want Angel to be different than Buffy, but you can't forget it came from Buffy and you are dealing with established characters.

This is old news for me.

I think that ultimately the network made the right choice since the WB network's main target audience is teenagers.

Also Kate is very unlikeable in the Corrupt script.
