  • Happy Thanksgiving GoSpuffy! And to all our other Canadian posters. What traditions do you do/eat/enjoy??

    Comment

    • In Canada it's a harvest festival, it comes earlier than the more known one in the states because we are in the north with an earlier frost. Typically it consists of a family dinner, turkey with all the trimmings. The statutory holiday is on the Monday but most of us do our dinner on the Sunday so we have a day off before heading back to work.

You've answered my question . . . but no fireworks? Of do they happen when all the family gather together?

            • Priceless How do Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving? Is it Turkey and fireworks?

No fireworks except the usual family dinner kind. This year we're in the middle of a too close to call federal election so a little more political debate than usual. My party is polling better than expected but the tories are surging a bit. Think good thoughts for Canada to get a liberal NDP coalition government. We really don't need another Trump Or Boris on the world stage. I will say our conservative leader looks sane compared to them, he just wants to slash the hell out of foreign aid and sociall benefits

I'm sending good vibes to the liberals, though I know nothing about Canadian politics Let us know the results once they come through. Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm a lefty so it's the NDP I support. I think they would be like your Labour Party? Left of centre. We chose a candidate for prime minister that I feared would not gather the usual left wing support because of racism but he's doing pretty good.

He's a Sikh man, complete with turban but he's getting the usual socialist numbers. We don't need to win. We just need to get enough seats so that there is a strong progressive voice in the house.

                  • Thanks all. (Am Canadian as well).

There's 3 main political parties here. Socialist New Democratic Party under Singh, the Liberals currently in power under Trudeau (II) and the Conservatives (Tories) with Scheer. The Tories are our most right-sided party but even they're typically considered leftist when compared to Republicans. None of them are really known for gaffes that make Trump and Boris punchlines though. Scheer did step in it though as it turns out he has dual US citizenship which the public didn't know about until recently. Perpetually 4th placers the Greens, (Elizabeth May) actually got an uptick recently which could carry over to the 21st, a victory for them would be winning enough minority seats to make some waves.

No fireworks though some do have smaller turkey dinners on the Monday if they aren't actually meeting with extended family.

Election Day! Fingers crossed that Canada stays at least marginally progressive....

                          • No vote on the Brexit deal. John Bercow did it again ;-)

Maybe this could be done quicker if every other member leaves the EU?

                            • Projecting a Liberal Minority. So Trudeau stays in power and is our leader and face when dealing with other countries; but will have to work with others to get anything major done. NDP alone might not be enough so he'd have to either work with the Bloc or the Tories which could be difficult but not impossible, though it does increase the chances of another election before the 4 years are up. (If Trudeau can't get at least 170 votes on something major it triggers a no-confidence vote which triggers another election).

The Bloc are Quebec only and have traditionally been separatists and were defeated pretty badly in 2015 but have re-surged now. They're mainly focused on more provincial autonomy rather then trying to leave Canada right now I believe though. They're banning religious symbols on public servants/government has been seen by many as racist; but they're forging ahead with it which may make it hard for Trudeau whose spoken against it, and Singh whom wears a turban to work with them. So...it went OK for lefties tonight overall. No major backslide at least for the next couple years. No "Canadian Trump or Boris" either.

                              • Dan Slayer it's most likely liberals plus NDP plus greens if needed. The Libs will never work with The conservatives and the bloc is an unlikely partner.

I hope to see proportional representation but won't hold my breath next election. But maybe action on climate change and clean water in every community is possible? And it won't happen but someone has to challenge bill 21 in Quebec. That's a national embarrassment.
