I enjoyed the dark twistiness of Mabus' Bringing Gifts. Dawn's voice comes of pretty authentically, it does sound like a child rambling. Which is both effective and moderately challenging to follow. Mabus does a great job building suspense, even though it is a relatively short piece. I particularly loved the idea that Spike had become a morality tale for other vampires; be careful or you might just end up like Spike.

      A few comments all around:

Mabus -- really like "All In Her Mind", a very nice study of things that must have happened. And, of course, "DeadWar" continues to be awesome, especially "MercyKiller".

Dorian's Kitten -- you really have Spike down awesome in both fics you've got here, at least by my concept of the character. Also love that you do a good job of getting the feel of Season 8 life very well.

Vallysia -- excellent first entry. Always nice to see small character studies like "Taking a Ride" is. It's a very cool hook to show how Buffy may have changed over the years.

KoC - really making a case for Bander!! Characters are really on -target and the reading is fun and *ahem* FUN!

Dorian's Kitten - I don't care what they do with Spike in the comics as long as you keep writing fiction for Spuffy!!! Have loved ( and cried through - but I'm an easy crier) both parts of Q&A.

For both - it's very interesting reading your two stories and how they almost seem "go together". If you add a few "steps" between where Q&A Part One and KoC's story begins - it's a nice story!

Also, love the nuances both writers bring to the characters. I can "hear" Spike, Xander and Buffy coming through loud and clear.

I'm off to read other writers!!

          Llywela, really enjoyed your ficlet.

The style is gorgeous and it's nice to read a SN fic - my first SN fic, btw. Unfortunately, can't remember the eppy very well - SN's a bit of a mush in my memory at the minute, I need to rewatch them, I've started rewatching s1, but I can't remember what happens in 212. It's one of the ones with a shapeshifter, but there were 2 and I'm getting mixed up. Cos there was one in s1 "shifting" with Dean, wasn't there? (Total mush - me brain's been GG'ed to death.)

Anyway, Real is beautifully written. Completely tuned in to the protagonist's confusion, which has the reader wondering about guest characters. What becomes of them after Sam and Dean have hit the road again? Do they "recover" from their encounter with the supernatural and move on, putting it all to the back of their minds never to be dug up again? Or do the Winchester brothers leave their mark, forever affecting the 40 odd lives they've saved? How does it feel to be one of those people who've had their minds - along with various body parts - messed with by some demon or other? How does it feel to be frightened to death by a situation that makes no sense whatsoever, and to have two cool guys like Dean and Sam pull you out of it like it was a walk in the park? Well, it feels like Real.

Very interesting choice of character and setting combined with an excellent style... Will you write another SN ficlet to keep us going during the summer drought?

Aww, thanks, Aissy This was me trying to knock a bit of rust off my hibernating muse! I have no idea if there will be any more ficlets - I only wrote one for SN before this, a long long time ago. I'm wary of writing for an open canon. Depends on the muse!

2.12 is one of the shapeshifter episodes, yes - the one in the bank. A real bottle show, with everyone trapped and the shifter changing form several times, so that you are never completely sure who is genuine and who is a threat.

I wonder with a lot of shows what life is like for the guest characters afterward - how do they make sense of what happens to them? Can they make sense of what happens to them? Do they retreat into denial? Do they talk about what they know happened, despite the disbelief of others? It's an interesting conundrum! We know with Sherri that she told something of her story, because she was referred to in a later episode as having given a statement insisting that Sam and Dean saved her life, and I'd wondered how she got there from the hysteria we saw in the episode. She had a lot of interaction with the boys, from initially seeing them as heroes, to feeling betrayed when they then started working with the hostage taker, to being terrified when they separated her from the rest of the hostages. And then she was confronted by her shapeshifter double and went to pieces completely - so she had a lot to work through!

YES! I remember now! Good eppy!

I've printed your fic off, anyway, so it'll probably stay on my desk on the pile of bits-of-fics till I'm up to 212 in my rewatching. So I can cast a glance at it again when I've seen this ep again - probably in about 18 + 12 = 30 days.

Yeah, and it makes brilliant fanfic material. It kinda sets the show into reality as well. Cos, you know, it's not another eppy, it's a life that's been affected by people. (We all know it's a TV show, but exploring guest characters makes the pretense last that bit longer.) And with a show like SN it works great because along the arcs you get a lot of those passing characters.

I was watching SN 104 last night, and the way Sam and Dean find out about their mission for the ep, is because this guy remembers John and Dean from a previous time when they helped him, and gives Dean a ring. So life went on for him after John and Dean left, then he heard of something weird happening, so he thought it was right up the Winchesters' street. But that guy, with the time before the show started... there's a fic there. Just saying...

Oh, that's Jerry. I love Jerry - such an early episode, and he's still one of my favourite guest characters

*is a bit scared that I can come up with that kind of detail off the top of my head*

So impressed by how organised your re-watching sounds. I'm at that stage of hiatus where I'm watching a little bit of this and a little bit of that scattered all over the place, with no rhyme or reason whatsoever!

Yes that is a little concerning. I'd seek professional advice.

Oh don't be impressed, I'm only organised with my addictions.

*is off to watch Men in Trees 104 before the cold turkey kicks in*

Jo, did you catch the review (in the wrong place, but I ran out of options - feedback on the forum was falling over as I posted ...) for the above-mentioned?

As soon as the problems stop blocking me from the page it's on, I'll copy over here - unless you did read it?

I just about managed to read it, thank you, Ferdy - posted a reply to say thanks and then ker-thud. The thread became unavailable. Stupid forum.

Sorry to butt in, but I've actually got that review in me email. I'd be happy to copy-paste if it helps either of you.

It was probably my post that broke that thread. Not that it needed much help. Stupid forum and stupid database.

Oh, but it's great to see so many fics and ficlets being posted here. It seems forum downtime has provided a bit of inspiration

From the horse's mouf ... (tee hee)

                            Real - a Supernatural ficlet

I've got so used to the Jo keeping order [there!] in Fanfic, rapping RPGers over the knuckles from behind an armour-plated chestplate and pinny, doing the splainy over and over and ... over, again as a newbie turns up with a ficlet (in the wrong place) and wonders where is a feedback thread, a VS thread and/or the acclaim of the assembled forum pop. (when the forum's working, sheeesh).

This is why Jo is here, cos the girl can write. Not showily but as solid as a solid thing. As a stream of consciousness, the un-obvious subtlety which drip feeds the whole story (which I dunno, my intensive telly watching is pretty much back in the day of BtVS and AtS ... pathetic much?) into place. The joined-up words recollected horror is scrumptious, particularly the surprise of such messing coming from a typoqueen and Mistress of Grammar ... and if that had chains, it would sound REALLY sexy ... but to get the parts played by the two lads so clearly in as well - well!

And the stream of consciousness balances controlled writing with unravelling existential angst very nicely indeed. A truly nasty experience in the eppy from the sound of it - lorrrst nothing in the telling here.

Luv the unsettling effect of her point of safety - the cops appear - turning out to be the worst challenge, as she has to keep holding to what she knows to be real when the world, including the cop version, can only cope with the simple splainy. Twins. Leaving the "how much of that horror was me?" whispering and giggling in the dark shadows.

Specific emotional mapping, subtlety punctuated by moments of horror. She's back ...

                            YAY!!!

Both for the kind words and for re-posting (stupid forum ) - always nice to keep feedback stored away someplace safe. Because the positive words can be a morale boost, and critical words are good to learn from!
