I don't think we need to make the fanfic discussion private. That fic was the worst one I've read and I have a visceral reaction to it. I've edited my comments/post to show that I've had time to reflect. I will try to be more circumspect in future

Oh no, those discussion threads are still there. I'll try to link the seven fics thread. The one you are talking about was the first during that week:

Ah, I see I did actually read it despite being adamant I couldn't remember it!! I did recall it vaguely as I read my comments.

In Demons willows spell goes wonky and all the scooby get trapped in it. Its after chosen and giles and dawn are making notes to set up a new council library based on buffy's memories. The spell shows them all of buffy's fights starting at the easiest ending at the hardest. Spike comes last and every thing that transpired between them is shown, not just the fights so yeah they see the sex but they also see the love. I adore this story.

Obviously we all come from our, in this case, very differing points of view with strong feelings about the characters and relationship being written about. Both perspectives no doubt feel that they hold a valid position which is strongly rooted in their investment in the characters, the relationship and show and whether they feel the story is a particularly positive or negative one. Although we often don't agree on fics entirely, I think it's safe to say it's uncommon to have such polar opposite feelings. But I think it is important to not make others feel criticised for responding differently. I am aware that on this particular story that others feeling very positive about it put off posters voicing equally strong negative responses themselves instead and I think that risks weakening the discussions. Whilst I appreciate it can be difficult when we all feel so passionately about these characters and their relationships and often our perspectives on the stories being discussed too, it is also worth bearing in mind the sensitivities of each other's responses to our posts as well.

I am aware that the premise of Gwennie's fic can be viewed as problematic and I have heard from others that they either stopped reading the story because of that or had reservations as to liking the fic despite it being well written - which is I think widely acknowledged. In so far it is not uncommon to find polar opposite opinions about this story. I can absolutely understand the opposing view. I am not really sure why I am comfortable with Dawn watching - basically - Spuffy porn and this discussion has made me question that. I haven't found an answer yet but if I will I am going to let you know

I think it is reducing the objections to the story greatly to keep fixating on it being just about the premise and/or Dawn viewing sex between Buffy and Spike. That was part of what gave me initial reservations but in the end, having discussed the story content with more than one person who has read it, that was a minor dislike for myself and certainly also for one of the other people compared to the characterisation and story direction issues in it. As I said, the strength of the polar opposite point of view on this story actually hampered some discussion on it, which is a shame and of course not how the group is intended to function. Unfortunately I can't see the same people returning to read and discuss it again as one side is unwilling to reread it for multiple reasons and that there isn't understanding about all of that is disappointing but perhaps something that we can learn from as a group for future discussions. That doesn't mean those who enjoyed it shouldn't reread and discuss it and new readers may also join in of course.

Sorry, no insult intended, I was just kidding around with my mates. I apologize if it came off as a criticism to others.

Knowing you GoSpuffy I was certain that it was intended as a light hearted comment, but I appreciate you saying that anyway. It was just that I was very aware of someone having felt that they shouldn't press their negative perspective and post on this particular story last time just because others were talking in very different terms about it. It's easy to forget we can feel isolated in the group if we don't respond the same but still feel like our pov comes from the same place, loving these characters and caring about what we read about them and their relationship. But hearing everyone's perspective and seeing where there are often different responses can be one of the best things when we all read together and I really enjoy reading and chatting with you guys about fics. If I find the time to read it before everyone has moved on to the next of course.

It is somehwat ironic that this is probably one of the most discussed fics without it ever having been picked for a group reading and discussion. We have talked about this fic already in the first suggestion thread and some time later we had seperate thread about Gwennie's fics. Now we have come back to this story once again. It definitely proofs at least that this story something to talk about :-)

I really do understand your point of view. I certainly don't want to give the impression I don't take your reservations seriously. I actually would love to hear more about your thoughts on this fic because I still think it is not only well written but actually fits into canon seamlessly and in a way I have not really seen before. But to compare our different views about the story altogether or certain parts of it we would have to read it and go through it chapter for chapter. And I can understand that you don't want to read this story because of your reservations. As I said before I have come across reservations regarding this Story by other readers too. It is probably safe to say this is a polarizing story. As a group we have long before decided to not read this fic for different reasons and as long as I don't get an urgent vote for reading Demons it will remain on the list of fics that have been suggested but not agreed on (yet). I hope this is okay for everyone?

Ah it is really difficult flow because I agree we can't discuss it properly without going through the story and I just really don't want to read it. There is part of me that would like to because I find the idea you feel it fits canon baffling going by what I know about the details of the story, and I have been given a lot of specifics about the story content, characterisations and direction of the story. I do find the idea of the others viewing Spike and Buffy having sex distasteful, but my biggest concerns are actually about the treatment Buffy receives in what the others are made to 'learn' about her and the relationship and actually how badly the inserted scenes and added relationship details within sit against canon. Obviously that doesn't fit at all how you feel about it but so much of the details I've been told lead me to feel that I'm really not likely to enjoy reading it at all. At the end of the day we read fanfic for enjoyment so I have been totally put off this story from what I learned of the contents (without even considering dislike for the basic premise).

As always you have been polite and encouraging but I kind of wish I hadn't voiced out against it in the first place and had just opted to not join in when/if it was read. Sorry discussion hijacked the thread.
