  • Strip Snap by Lilachigh starting 24th of May 2019

The next story to be read and discussed is going to be Strip Snap by Lilachigh and we will start Friday fortnight.

The story is set in season 6 and it`s word count is 70k. You can find it here:

    https://dark-solace.org/elysian/view...t=ok&warning=5

    and here:

    https://archiveofourown.org/works/82...apters/1558238

and also on TBSV, ff.net and TSR.

Summary: Buffy's 21st birthday party - she and Spike are sitting behind the sofa on the floor, playing cards. An innocent enough game, but the consequences are going to change them both for ever, when they are faced with making decisions that involve friends, enemies and the people they love the most.

You are welcome to post your thoughts while you are reading it and before the discussion officially starts but please use Spoiler brackets in that case and remove them on Friday 24th.

    Have fun!

Dear Lilachigh, if you have found your way to this thread, please be so kind as to read this:

The discussion is supposed to start today. Unfortunately I have been ill for the past week and I have not been able to finish the story.

    Has anyone else read it?

Nope. I still haven't finished Hunger and I've also still got a sick child at home. 2019 is riddled in illness.

I haven't even started it! As usual I shall read and post as I go along, if that's ok.

I'm fine and no-one in my family is ill (they wouldn't tell me if they were because they know in advance I don't care ) I'm just following the usual pattern of being crap at everything and thinking about stuff (Lucifer) rather than doing stuff.

I'm on part 95 of the barbverse. I've read strip snap before but will finish up barbverse and then re-read and then comment.

I've just started Strip Snap and am enjoying it. There's a strange jump early on, where Buffy and Spike are playing snap and having an interesting conversation, then suddenly it jumps to 'Two weeks later . . . '. It's an odd jump, but the story is fast paced, so that's a good thing.

I noticed that too. It was a wonderful scene at the beginning that called back to Older And Far Away but it didn`t really have anything to do with the rest of the story. I's not that this scene is misplaced in any way. It isn't. It's just that it could also have been a one shot and the story could have started two weeks later.

I really like the gentlemanly, chamapagne-bringing, boat-rowing Spike. I am such a fan of this gentle side of Spike. It does seem funny though, that he brings just a few bottles of beer and an additional guest to the party itself and then suddenly he is all "Oh, a girl must have champagne for her 21st birthday..."

I am a huge William fan, therefore the first half of the story is very much to my liking, although I found it hard to believe that William of all people would instantly turn into a sex-god. But it gets really interestingly, when suddenly Spike pops up as well and we have William and Spike in one and the same story at the same time and they are both vampires. That's a unique plot twist and I don't remember having seen or read it before.

Unfortunately that was the point where I had to stop reading. I am trying to get back into the story as soon as possible.

I like the story, with William appearing in place of Spike, I think that's a nice twist. This William seems a little bit dense though. In some ways he reminds me of Anya, there's an 'oddness' about him that's a bit different than being just a man out of time. The story so far is quite slight and just seems to be cover for Spike/Buffy/William to have lots of sex . . . not that there is anything wrong with that

Am I on my own in not liking William in any manifestation? I feel like such a bad person. I think it's my class sensibilities. Perhaps people will sympathize with my plight if I claim childhood trauma as a result of being forced to watch The Forsyte Saga. I can't bear to be in the same room as Downton Abbey.

I quite liked Downton Abbey . . . I find there are two settings for William in fanfic. One is in 19th century London, a poet, living with his poor widowed mother. I mostly don't mind him. The second is a man out of time, somehow magicked into Buffy's time. I much prefer William in his own time. When he's in the modern world, I just end up missing Spike

I've never watched Downton Abbey but I should confess I own FS on DVD (both the '67 and the '02 version). I don't like William on the show...he's too hysterical for me. I've had a quick look at it and I'll give it a miss. I don't think my ears can attune themselves to 19th century patterns of speech - seriously. It's no reflection on the author - I have the same problem with George Eliot!

I've finished reading strip snap and I agree it often seems written primarily for buffy to hook up with a variety of versions of Spike, not that there's anything wrong with that. It is more than porn with plot and the story is quite well thought out and has nice pacing and characterization throughout. It does have one of my least favorite tropes in it, Willow and/or Xander acting as the bad guy keeping Spike and Buffy apart. I think I've read this too many times and I just prefer when the bad guy isn't a scooby. I absolutely loved Dawn rushing in as the hero, I thought that was Really well done. All in all a light hearted romp that doesn't take itself too seriously.
