  • Articles/essays/notes on fanfiction

I`ve read interesting articles on fanfiction before and linked them in separate threads. As ist seems to be a recurring topic, I wanted, I`d to start a thread for linking and discussing all kind of articles, essays and notes on fanfiction. I am gonna link the articles, who already have a separate threads here as well. Let´s make this a compilation!

This is an article by a fanfic writer on how fanfic writers are still looked upon as being weird:

13 Things Fan Fiction Writers Are Very Tired Of Explaining. ByEmma Lord. Mar 23 2015

This is an article by a fanfic writer on how fanfic writers are still looked upon as being weird:
As an academic I can honestly say, I don't find fanfic particularly weird. I know colleagues who read it (I think one might write it). Academia's always had an interest in (I first came across it in relation to Spock/Kirk about 20 years ago) and that interests growing. I've just had a quick look on Google Scholar and found this:

Fanfic and Fan Fact: How Current Copyright Law Ignores the Reality of Copyright Owner and Consumer Interests in Fan Fiction.

    https://scholar.smu.edu/cgi/viewcont...&context=smulr

Bit dry for my liking ( Lawyers! ) but it does mention Fox not being too happy about Buffy fanfic.

Katrina Blasingame: “I Can’t Believe I’m Saying It Twice in the Same Century. . . but ‘Duh . . .’”1 The Evolution of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sub-Culture Language through the Medium of Fanfiction

    http://offline.buffy.de/outlink_en.p...Blasingame.pdf

There's also a Masters thesis (seems to be about Spuffy - mentions “West of the Moon, East of the Sun”) here:

“KINDA TWISTY AND WEIRD”: QUEERING THE HETEROSEXUAL ROMANCE IN BUFFYSHIPPER FANFICTION"

There are others but many of them can only be accessed through a University account.

I'd never heard of Commaful before, and the site looks good, but I've just searched 'Buffy' and nothing comes up, so I think either there's nothing on the site or you have to be a bit devious when searching for stuff. Has anyone else used that site before?

It's got an App. My new rule is: "'ware anything with an App. (They're generally evil)"

I searched "Buffy" and got nothing. I searched "Loki" and got something. I searched "Spike" and got purple ponies (WTF!?). As I said...evil.

(Seriously - I'm guessing either BtVS is too old a fandom or too established a fandom and folk know where to look).

Thanks for trying. I tried 'Buffy' and got nothing. From the front page I saw there seemed to be a lot about Korean boybands, which is not my thing. i think I'll stick to EF, AO and FF etc., at least I know what I'm doing on those

Didn`t we secretly always know, that it is just cool, to be with someone, who is into fanfiction?

These are articles on fanfiction we already had linked on separate threads, but I wanted to link them here again. It has probably to do with me being an obsessive mind ...

What writing fanfiction taught me as an editor:

                https://uncannymagazine.com/article/...2L-qNrlU2IqqiY

                The Coffee Shop AU:

                https://www.dailydot.com/parsec/mill...anfiction/?amp

                How fanfiction went mainstream:

                https://www.theguardian.com/books/20...P=share_btn_tw

The next one is a new link. It`s not an article nor an essay it`s some notes on writing fanfiction combined with a couple of questions and answers from one of my all-time favorite fanfic writers - Herself/Herself_nyc. You have to scroll down a bit to get to the actual notes and Q&A`s:

That was good, and "he has never, ever, not even once, cried tears of blood" just made me laugh. The comic seasons have contradicted what she says about him not having worn black nail polish since S5 though.

But is it true he didn't wear nail polish throughout season 6, season 7 and AtS season 5? I was actually surprised about that.

I think that's true yes. And I've just had a quick flick through the screencaps I have of S6/7/A5 too and can't see any nail polish at a quick look to contradict it.
