The conventions in fan fiction are bizarre, aren't they? Especially Spike's "Peaches" nickname for Angel - which he uses once in all of the series in Lover's Walk - but is ubiquitous in the stories.
Let's not forget calling Xander the whelp, and Tara Glinda. I don't think that ever happened. I do like referring to Xander as the slayer's boy given that means Buffy is his sire.

I can think of another instance in which a vampire "smells" fear - in Tabula Rasa, the vamp chasing the gang in the sewers pauses and says, "I smell fear - and it smells good!" Not exactly the greatest line!

However, this isn't really a "vampire smelling emotions" moment because even humans can smell fear. When hormones like adrenaline are pumping, the resulting sweat creates body odor through the apocrine glands under the arms and between the legs and other places - it's the same with sexual arousal. This kind of smelly sweat is completely different from the skin-deep eccrine glands all over the body that are produced by exercise. Fear sweat (or flop sweat as we call it in the theater) makes the body temporary more responsive to threats and/or a sexual partner and heightens sensation. A vampire smelling this would be no more remarkable than an overly-sensitive human with the ability to also hear a rapid heat rate and shallow breathing. I doubt a vampire could read "happiness" or "depression" in the same way.
I tend to assume they have super senses. I mean, I couldn't smell Spike all over anyone. I certainly couldn't smell that Wesley had sex with a bleached blond the night before. Most predators have enhanced senses so they'd be part of the demonic upgrade.

The whole claim thing for vampires has been around since the beginning of vampire stories and comes from one the first vampire novel in 1872 - in Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, a female vampire lays a claim to a young woman, Laura. This pre-dates Dracula by some years - and has a fascinating lesbian subtext in which the female vampire does a kind of "claim" thing before she bites the young woman on the breast:

Claims are also a pretty big thing in the series True Blood - and I'd say a lot of the "claim" fics in BtVS are contemporary with that series.
I think a lot of claim fics come from other claim fics. Though, to be fair, there's some degree of wiggle room if you extrapolate from the Clan of Aurelius and the Master. The existence of the Order shows a degree of social organization with definite cultural norms. I enjoy a lot of the exploration of that background. I'm all for world building if there is actual world building.

I can read almost anything and enjoy it if it's well written. But sometimes, the stories - well - they get a little silly. I think the stories that literally make me roll my eyes are the ones that go into excruciating detail about Buffy and Spike's physical attributes that make them sexual dynamos - especially when it comes to Buffy's Slayer "muscles" that almost literally squeeze Riley's tender parts in half and Spike's supposedly remarkable member that would make a porn star green with jealousy.

Spike may be sexy, but come on! If he were that big, he'd have to wear armored pants or a special codpiece just to fight or he might poke himself (or Buffy) in the eye!
As someone who reads a fair amount of slash, I have to tell you that this is true of all the upstanding members of the cast. In one story Angel's manly parts are described as being larger than that of a donkey. There are some that describe the equipment in great detail - comparing and contrasting as it were. Being demonized seems to work well as a penis enlarger as the human men are above average but not mythic. Modern vamp recruitment tool?
I know that Stoney and Kimothyschma are experts on Spuffy fan fiction who have guided me a lot in the past - at one point, we were talking about the cliches of fan fiction. Some of my favorites gathered over time:
These are all fantastic- and scary recognizable. I have read much Spuffy - still do. And there are carryover into M/M

    3. Vampy biting causes massive orgasm for Buffy[/QUOTE]

Yup! Vampgasm occurs in all sexual partners regardless of sex. Usually includes seeing stars and blacking out - will probably occur many times in a row - actually has some symptoms of head trauma. Another thing Spuffy and M/M share is voracious sexual appetites and nonexistent refractory time. William was a virgin when he was turned - which means he heals back into a virgin. That features in a lot of M/M as the vamp version of slayer muscles.

    15. The Watcher’s Council and/or Initiative will often set up conditions in which Spike and Buffy mate.
    17. Joyce insists that Spike live in her house while recovering from being mutilated or crippled in some terrible way.
Yup! There's also a huge trope of Spike having been gang raped and otherwise sexually abused while being held captive by the iniative. He either goes to Angel, or Angel discovers him beaten and broken. I love those stories. I think the lj name for the trope is hurt the pretty. Sometimes he goes from Joyce's house to Angel's house to get him away from Sunnydale.

    4. All the Scoobies turn evil and try to either kill Spike or slut-shame Buffy to death.
Popular Spike/Giles trope. S/G pretty much only occurs in universes where Buffy is not brought back. Spike either bribes or shames Giles into staying. There is some nice Ripper/ chipped Spike energy - all the way to serious BDSM.

    7. Xander/Riley/Angel/Giles hurts Spike or sells him as a sex slave in order to enable some massive hurt/comfort scenarios when Buffy saves him.
Yes, Spike does get damseled a lot. Throw in Wesley and Buffy as possible abusers. Bad character hurts Spike - good character rescues him. I kinda like those too. Proud H/C slut here.

I think Marsters has an amazing ability to radiate pain - and Spike in pain gives huge feels.
Can we agree that the writers made everyone do and say everything with a thought to getting good ratings and being renewed. This includes everything we love as well as everything we hate.

Oh god yeah, thats one of my 'kinks' too. I mean Spike when he's either physically or emotionally hurt is just.......amazing. But then they used to call the orgasm "the little death" and boy JM's a past master of that.

Ha, bespangled, yes! blacking out from the sheer force of orgasm, I'd forgotten that. Ah that always makes me laugh.

La Petit Morte's an important metaphor in Touched - I don't know it has the same resonance in most fan-fic. What the hell - I'm obviously not as fussed as you lot. I require it's a) not boring and b) not too convoluted I can't follow the plot (I'm really rubbish at plot). Probably because my day job involves "quality"* texts and prohibits statements such as I liked it/I didn't like it, I'm more inclined to read without without real consideration (otherwise it becomes too much like work). It's also why I'm crap at reviews.

          * Note the inverted commas - this isn't a comment on the worth of fan-fic.

I didn`t know that (I sometimes feel really illiterate) and I find it very interesting, that the claim actually exists in fiction outside the Buffyverse and long since before the Buffyverse. Thank you for sharing this !

I've already read almost all of the stories that you guys have suggested so far - but you're going so fast that I can hardly catch a moment to comment on any of them
We are going to have seperate threads from now on and we hope this will make it easier for people to participate only in the discussion for the stories, they are interested in and also to come back to those threads later.

I would make some suggestions of my own, but I'm not sure what would satisfy such a large group. Everyone likes something different!
We have never agreed on a story before ! Some of us have dropped out in the middle of a story, while others declared the same story their new favorite. Some of us have even outright rejected, to read a certain story. But that is part of the fun and of the variety. I would be very interested, to hear your suggestions.

My all time favorite is this forgotten gem from a fic on The Crypt that will remain unnamed
I have made the mistake to google Priapus. How do I get rid of that mental image now?

Some of my favorites are "His tongue mapped out the contours of her mouth" (I am not sure, if it sounds more romantic, if you are a native english speaker. I have to translate it in my head and maybe it just looses it´s natural charme during that process ?), Buffy using the adjective "ginormous" for Spike`s little Spike and a fic, that was trying to be very specific and informed us, that the precise length of Spike`s penis is eight inch. I made the same mistake, I did with Priapus. I googled the equivalent in centimeters......Then I wished, I hadn`t done it or the writer had put some time and effort in researching the anatomy of a vagina.

Another thing, I don`t like to read in fanfiction: pregnant Spike. It is just too bizarre.

I've recently read a couple of dom/sub fics with Giles as the dom and I just couldn't buy it. They were both well written, one with Spike and one with Willow as the sub, and I just found it difficult to believe.

Lol, I know! It was one of the fics discussed on The Sunnydale Fanfic Club podacast. It was inspired by Giles's question to Willow in S7 'do you want to be punished?'. I couldn't finish it because I just didn't buy Willow wanting to be physically hurt or Giles getting pleasure from doing so. Here's the link if you want to read it . . .

Well, I guess, we have read through all the usual vanilla ones and now we just have to look into some of the .....stuff that is more unusual.

Oh I could very much see Giles as the dom in a pairing, particularly when it comes to slash. I've read enough fics involving that angle.

And Spike can make a very convincing sub imo.

Lol, I quite believe Spike as a sub, but not with Giles. I just cannot see Giles in that sort of relationship. I think it's because of the relationships we've seen him in; Jenny and Olivia. Ripper, on the other hand could probably be more believable to me when I think of his relationships with Ethan and Joyce . . . I may have thought far too much about this

Oh I don't see Giles being a sub, more like a dom. Ethan would be a wonderful sub.

Oh, Ripper is quite the Dom - and with Spike as his partner it's got lovely tension because Spike is physically capable of defeating Giles, except for the chip. I don't see BDSM as problematic because it is consensual. Granted, Spike doesn't go for safe words - he counts on the fact that he isn't going to get dusted. But there is no virtue in vanilla that I can see.

I always figure Spike was a virgin when he was turned so his sexual education was at the hands of Dru, Angel, and Darla. We know that Angel tortured Dru until she craved pain. We know that Spike complimented Buffy in how she made it hurt in all the wrong places. I think Spike can be a dom - but he also likes the pain he gets as a sub.

Tea and Biscuits deals with exactly the problem of Giles enjoying playing Ripper, but not wanting to be only Ripper in a sexual relationship. It's a classic fic - started when the show was still on. Takes place in a universe where Buffy died - as to her coming back that is also dealt with. Wesley is also a major character, and there are others. It's actually one of my comfort fics.

I'm going to add one random personal thing in fanfiction I don't enjoy - at least - it breaks the flow for me while I'm reading (doesn't apply to anything I'm reading right now.) I tried to start writing my own fanfic for myself (lol, I'm that obsessive), and I found I kept coming up against this obstacle - breath and heartbeats.

I really don't like when a fanfic keeps reminding us that Spike's heart doesn't beat, and he has no breath, because it spoils the way in which the character is shown emoting on the show. Of course, he's a vampire and doesn't have breath or a heart, but we're meant to know that metaphorically, if it's taken too literally how do we convey emotion or excitement? Or explain all the heavy breathing/ panting he does in intimate scenes, fighting or kissing? It's disconcerting in a fic to keep bringing that up.
                                .
