  • Fanart Feedback

Right, I'm sure I read about this thread somewhere. I thought it was in the one about the new forum banners, but apparently not. It's about a thread that used to be over at BW. One for serious critique on improving fan-art.I think that this would be a good idea to have again, as we all do feedback in the normal threads, but most of it is quite simple, just saying a few words about a piece, whereas this would be totally focusing on just a few pieces.

Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I think it would be fine to have a single serious critique thread in the fanart section. Sure. You can post a piece you want to have commented on in detail. slaycandy does this for all her feedback anyway. Man, she really goes all out! But, yeah. That sounds fine to me!

I absolutely would love to see this thread back. I didn't know if there was anyone else interested in it so I'm glad to see you post about it.

I loved how you could give and recieve totally honest and to the point comments without any fear of being misunderstood. I found it a good tool to better my own eye in examining art as well as to give tailored tips to improve a piece.

For me at least, it might help lighten the burden of feeling the need to seriously critique every piece in the regular threads. Which I love to do, but sometimes it keeps me from doing any feedback since I'm pressed for time.

Obviously the serious critique thread would require maturity in handling comments and not abusing the generosity of others by posting lots of walls or not giving any critiques. But I think it's a great way to get help when stuck on a piece.

I'd love to see the thread return.

I have seen the new thread and I for one am really pleased that the opportunity is there to receive some serious pointers on pieces, but I just wanted to ask something. (I didn't put this in the actual thread for fear of clogging it up)

If you post a piece to be critiqued, would there be an expectation to return the favour and seriously critique someone else's piece? The reason I ask is that newer fanartists trying to get pointers are not likely to be able to give as good views back - especially to more experienced artists. I know it is pretty unreasonable to ask someone to put effort into critiquing a piece for nothing in return, but sometimes it can be hard when you start out to see the flaws in another persons work - I can remember thinking wonders of a piece I saw when I first started and when I look at it now it's nothing very special. To be honest it's the experienced artists I want to be ripping my pieces to shred - someone who knows what they're talking about. I don't feel that I could really help another artist who's work is generally much more accomplished than mine other than what I like about the piece - and I can do that in the ordinary feedback threads.

Don't get me wrong, I am very excited about this thread - even though I know I would have some really hard knocks coming my way, I desperately want to improve and the only way to really do that is honesty. I am totally willing to give the serious feedback stuff a go for the benefit of everyones art in general, but wanted to be sure.

I think anyone who wants to give a serious critique can. No one is obligated too. Of course newer artists can post theirs for a critique but I don't think they should feel obligated to do so in return, as they might not feel comfortable doing so. But I think everyone should feel encouraged to drop by the thread every once in awhile and see if they might be able to write something up for one of the posters.

No one should abuse the system, of course. But I wouldn't be concerned with that happening.

hmmmm....I saw this too...I didn't want to clutter up the other thread asking this, but do the normal feedback rules apply? I mean do we have to critique at least 4 artists, or since everyone is limited to one wall a month will we be able to critique one peice in a post if so desired?

No, you could do a single in depth critique if you wanted.

And I wanted to echo Jenni Lou that anyone should feel welcome to attempt a critique regardless of skill level. And as she mentioned, slaycandy does really good critiques if you want to see an example. A critique not just about design and execution, its also about the meaning and how it makes you feel or inspires in you.

Anyway, it's not like you are graded and if you post art you should expect honest comments. No one should be rude and I don't expect anyone to be that way.

Yep this isn't something that everyone who posts has to give their critque because this is a serious thread therefore I think most people wanting help want it from the more experienced artists. But if you feel you have something to say don't let the fact you haven't been arting long or anything put you off. Everyone loves feedback

It's not about being rude it's about being completely honest. When I feedback in the normal art threads I point out all the nice things and maybe one thing to change, but in this thread I would point out all the things that could be done better. But it has to be said constructively so it's helpful.
